The Elephant Rope

In previous blogs, we have mentioned about us being programmed, having fixed thought patterns and beliefs. I find that this parable of the Elephant Rope explains that very well:

As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at any time, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not. He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.” The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.

This is also exemplified in the story of Ulysses in Greek mythology. Ulysses had himself tied to the mast of his ship so he could not yield to the temptation when they passed the island of the sirens. The sirens represented temptation. Like the elephants, many of our beliefs are being taught, told by the societies, organizations, cultures and families that we were born into, and some being carried forward from previous lives. In other words, we are being tied up by the elephant rope. How far we can move when being tied becomes our safety zone, or what we believe our potentials and limitations lie within. If our thoughts are not our own thoughts, we can blame others and victimize ourselves. In other words, we do not need to be responsible. This is an unenlightened consciousness.

Through RoHun therapy, I have become aware of my old thought patterns and beliefs, which have created every single experience that I have had in my life up till now. I began to understand why I reacted the ways I did, and where are those thoughts rooted, which created the negative reactive emotions. I found and identified many of the ropes that I am attached to. This also helps me tremendously in understanding and in dealing with all relationships. I have since then been developing my spiritual awareness, to understand my thoughts and feelings, and realize that I now have the freedom to choose how I would like to respond with all the ups and downs in all the adventures in life.

One might wonder why is this necessary. Our physical dis-eases all have their root causes, and the root conditions extend beyond the physical body to the mental and emotional life of us. Our physical dis-ease is always a message for us when we are out of harmony with nature and our own true self. They each provided us an opportunity to return to the path of harmony. Permanent healing results when the root cause and conditions of the disease are removed.

However, we are the elephants who have been tied to a rope for a long time. We have grown to become very comfortable in our uncomforted comfort zone. Even when we realize that the ropes attach to us are not being tied to anything, we may not know where we can go and what we can do with the new freedom that we have never had. In my personal experience, RoHun therapy provides me with the understanding, wisdom and direction to a deep exploration and path of self-discovery.

One has to understand that RoHun therapy is not a healing that can heal you and make you feel happy and free with a magical touch. It is a journey in which the therapist and you work together to enter areas of the subconscious to discover your faulty thoughts, and transform them into thoughts of love, wisdom. It helps you in building your inner spiritual strength to fully express your love and abilities, and to be responsible for yourself.
